Oshawa landlords lose students’ housing appeal Ontario Municipal Board rejects zoning change for campus-area homes

Oshawa’s zoning bylaws can’t be used to work around restrictions on housing near the UOIT and Durham College campus, landlords were told recently in an Ontario Municipal Board ruling.

The City has a licensing bylaw that limits to four the number of bedrooms that can be rented in homes near the campus. In 2010, a group of landlords put forward a new zoning proposal that would see 133 houses on Dalhousie Crescent, Concordia Court and Niagara Drive rezoned to allow either five or six bedrooms.

The group, Homeowners of North Oshawa, took the case to the OMB in 2011 and in January the OMB issued its decision on the group’s proposed zoning bylaw amendment.
