Whitby, March 23, 2012—Each year, MoneySense magazine ranks municipalities across the country to determine Canada’s Best Places to Live. This year the Town of Whitby ranked 16th overall.
Canada’s Best Places to Live compiles data from 190 cities and towns with populations over 10,000 and ranked each community on its liveability. A total of 22 factors including climate, home affordability, crime rates, cultural and sport activity, employment, affluence and other amenities were considered in the 2012 analysis.
“I am very pleased that the Town of Whitby ranked 16th overall,” said Mayor Pat Perkins. “Whether residents prefer an urban or rural setting Whitby is a great place to live, raise a family, do business and retire. Our growing economy, strong institutions, steady population growth, low crime rate and beautiful surroundings make Whitby a great place to live, work, and play.”
In addition to its overall rating the Town of Whitby ranked as the12th Best Place to Raise Kids, 33rd Best Place to Retire and 39th Best Places for Jobs. Among communities with a population between 100,000 and 250,000 Whitby was ranked as the 5th Best Place to Live.
The Town of Whitby’s cultural, sport and youth programs and its accreditation as one of the few Platinum Youth Friendly Communities in Ontario help position it as a top place to raise kids. The Town of Whitby also addresses the needs of its growing senior population with dedicated recreation and leisure programs and facilities.
“While steeped in history with a small town atmosphere, Whitby has a vibrant and progressive character that includes the amenities and sophistication of a larger urban centre,” added Mayor Perkins.
