Major transit project coming to Whitby

A new transit project is coming to Whitby, that will result in several construction jobs as well as 300 to 400 full-time jobs.  Finance Minister and Whitby-Oshawa MP Jim Flaherty announced Thursday, that the Federal Government is investing $94.8-million in a GO-Transit maintenance facility, that’ll be built just off Victoria Street, just west of Thickson.  The project will be a public-private partnership, with a private partner still to be chosen to design, build and maintain the facility.  The Province will contribute 75 percent of the final project cost.  The building, which is expected to be up and running by 2017, will house several amenities including 18 storage tracks, a fuelling station as well as coach, diesel, paint and wheel shops.
